We often think of righteousness as something we achieve, being moral enough, spiritual enough, good enough for God. But the Bible says our true hope is in what Martin Luther called an alien righteousness, a righteousness that is not our own but comes from outside of us. Paul writes, “not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ” (Philippians 3:9).
This means that God’s acceptance of us does not rest on how well we perform, but on Christ’s perfect record credited to us by grace alone. That truth humbles us because it tells us we cannot save ourselves. But it also gives us unshakable confidence because our standing before God is anchored not in our weakness but in Christ’s strength.
Grace alone frees us from the exhausting treadmill of self-justification. It enables us to rest, rejoice, and live with assurance because in Christ we are already loved, already accepted, already secure.
Takeaway: You do not have to earn God’s love, because in Christ it has already been given to you.
Questions to Consider:
- Where are you tempted to build your confidence before God on your own efforts rather than on Christ’s finished work?
- How might remembering His perfect righteousness bring you rest and joy today?
