In the book of Nehemiah, we read how the people of Israel rebuilt the wall of Jerusalem. It was hard work, often done with a tool in one hand and a weapon in the other, because opposition was everywhere. Yet this task was more than just construction. It was a sign that God was restoring His people and renewing their hope.
In the New Testament, we see a different kind of building project. Paul tells us that “you are God’s building” (1 Corinthians 3:9). Christ Himself is the foundation, and we are called to build upon it, not with stone and mortar, but with lives shaped by grace and truth. Just as Nehemiah’s wall marked out God’s people for His purposes, so the church is now God’s dwelling place in the world, a visible sign of His kingdom.
This means that every Christian is called to build. Not everyone lays bricks in the same way. Some teach, some serve, some encourage. All of us contribute to God’s mission of making Christ known. The good news is that the strength to build does not come from us. It comes from the Spirit who empowers us and the grace of Christ that secures us.
Takeaway: God is calling you to build His church by participating in His mission, using the gifts He has given you for the sake of others.
Questions to Consider:
- Where is God inviting you to pick up a “stone” and take part in His work of building today?
- How can you rely more on Christ’s strength, rather than your own, in that task?
